Having shot some flowers in sunlight, at f8 or f11, I decided to try some insects, on those flowers, at more-realistic apertures, in the case of the selected images, f14.
At ISO 400, one of my regular settings for full flash, the shutter speeds were 1/250 and 1/320 second, respectively. This was an exercise in trusting (but carefully watching) AF. Most of the results were near misses on the focus and a stop smaller should have nailed them. Anyway, these two images are very encouraging.
The first image has been cropped by nearly 50%, the second by about 30%.
Olympus OM-1 (aperture priority, IS 5 way), MMF-2 adapter, Olympus Digital 50mm 1:2 Macro ED, hand-held.

Thanks, everyone.
I think the white petal between the harsh light of the sun and the subject did a good job of diffusing it.
I have some hoverflies from this session in which the above factor may not have operated. I wil probably post them tomorrow.
