I have a flower bed with cosmos in them that some years grow very tall with lots of blooms. They have not done well in the past several years because of drought conditions I guess, but this year is a winner. They attract a lot of butterflies & moths. Occasionally I will try to photograph them if they will let me. I got lucky on a few this year.

This one was hard to catch! When it landed on a bloom, it flapped it's wings rapidly (almost like a hummingbird). I was fortunate that it was still just long enough for me to snap this one.

    Thanks Denise & Rags.

I usually have dozens of various butterflies & moths flitting around at any given time around this time of year when the cosmos are in full swing. I love to watch them. I usually watch them for a while, then pick a spot near where they seem to like to land most frequently and then stand very still and wait for them. I've had them land on me before, but they usually prefer the flowers (lol).

The monarchs are usually more cooperative than other butterflies. They are generally still when they land on a flower. :D

Thank you so much Cristobal, Eric, Phil, & Tatiana. I took these photos with my old Olympus E-5 and the 50-200 mm lens. When I saw the butterflies, I didn't have time to search for my macro lens so went with what was handy. I am very happy that I was able to capture a couple of decent images.

I have recently begun the migration over to Canon. Right now, I just don't have the lens to try to photograph the butterflies with the Canon. My next purchase is going to me the 100 mm macro. It would be an understatement to say that I cannot wait to get my hands on that. I wish I had it now, though if I did I would probably not get any work done around the house because I would be camped out by the butterfly garden. :D

    Thanks again all.

These are beautiful. The second is my preference due to the simplicity of the background.

Thank you David & Stumblebum. I wish I had a different background on the first one, too, but you just have to take what the little critters will give ya! mwink.gifwinkmwink.gif
