In the gallery settings / appearance it would be good to be able to reposition the the gallery cover image as they rarely work out with the default position.

In the mean time, you can crop the image at 2.5:1 ratio and then it will fit better in the gallery cover.

So, 3 yrs later... where is this?

The ability to reposition the cover photo was added less than a month after my post (so ~3 years ago)!

We've been hearing for years you're going to fix cutting off heads in portraits. We've still holding our breath.

If the photo has facial recognition or the camera provided the focus point used (which is usually the eyes in a portrait photo), that information will be automatically used to align the face within the Cover Photo and within Feature Images. That's also been live for 2+ years

In other words, the rest of us with cheaper cameras you don't care about.
I shoot birds and some of them are tall. Not all photos are of people.

I can’t think of a single feature on SmugMug that is built with cost or feature set of camera in mind. Any photographer that cares about their photos is important and we have tools for all of you.
Many of the oldest digital cameras embed metadata with the focus point included. What subject you choose to photograph has no bearing. Focusing on the eye or head of a bird works just the same as the eye of a human, works just the same as my camera focusing on a waterfall landscape
