Stupid battery question

I hope this is the right forum for this question. If I blew it please move it.
I have a canon powershot G2. I need a new battery. For some reason the original won't hold a charge anymore.
anyway onto my question:
Canon wants $70 bones for a replacement battery..then there are a million battery shops selling what is billed as an equivelant battery for anywhere from 11.95-16.00.

do I need to get the canon batt or are one of these cheapies going to work just fine?

thanks in advance for any words of wisdom:thumb

Personally, I've had good luck with after-market batts. YMMV.

I've heard stories that the knock-offs don't have the same life.

Never had one myself, so I'm speaking out of turn.

Personally, I'd buy Canon just to be sure. But if you're strapped, then at least do some thorough Googling and photo forum research.
    Sid.

The generic battery i have for the 20D outlasts my canon original. The canon battery is maybe just a little bit newer.

Some dutch guy sold it to me down near the wharves in san francisco last may when i was over there for $10 bucks & its a beaut.

I would have no worries buying a generic again.

    Hiya Doggie!

Hope all's well in the PNW.

I run generics in my little P&S and haven't had a problem. Even had a couple
for the 10d. Others have noticed that they tend to last a bit longer. That is
my experience with those I run in the S50. I picked mine up at Fry's (mega
mart electronics, I think there's one in PDX).
