edit text watermark > previous text definition flips back to image

I was delighted to hear about the new text watermark feature. It is super easy to set up a watermark using this feature.

Unfortunately if I need to edit the watermark I pretty much need to start from scratch since the definition that shows when I try to edit the watermark indicates it is an image watermark.

Here's the initial watermark definition:

After saving the watermark I re-opened it to verify the settings. When I click the wrench to open and edit the watermark, I see that the type has flipped to Image and the watermark text is not readable (since it is shown in the space that fits an image thumbnail):

If I switch the Type back to Text I lose my text and must re-enter it. Note that the font size and font have switched back to the default in addition to the text getting reset to nothing:

I love the new feature but I'd like to be able to create a watermark, test it, then come back and edit to refine the watermark.

I'm checking to see if this is intended behavior or if you should be able to edit the text watermark.

    Thanks Kelly.

I can't imagine this is intended. This behavior makes it very difficult to test and change the watermark. Two items that I need to be able to adjust are the fade and the font size.

    Hi Denise,
While this interaction obviously isn't ideal, we did want to make sure to release Text Based Watermarks as soon as possible. Improving how you edit the this watermark is something we can improve in the future as we iterate on this feature!

    Thanks for commenting Aaron.

I guess what you're telling me is that if I want to use the text-based watermarking I need to make sure I take a screen shot when I create the watermark so I can look back at the settings. And I will need to essentially redefine the watermark when I realize that the size and opacity of the watermark isn't right.

That's not a huge problem since it is an easy definition. But it's certainly not user-friendly. And if it is possible to open the watermark definition for editing then it should reflect the current settings; it doesn't.

For now, yes. Though you should be able to tell most of the settings just by seeing the image of it.

I'm curious, is there a reason why the preview shown when making the text based watermark, doesn't give you the proper size/opacity to know which setting you want?

The sample photo doesn't compare with seeing the watermark on photos in a gallery. I needed to see how it appeared both in lightbox and in collage landscape. I guessed at the size and needed to adjust it. And the opacity on a sample with a pretty dark background didn't give me a good idea of how it would look on a sampling of photos. The image sample set isn't enough. Yes, there are several examples - but they don't match my photos closely enough, and they all show dark images, no light image examples. Maybe your sample images work for other photographers; the images don't come close to working for me.

I have to admit it kind of blows my mind that you allow editing on a text watermark but essentially wipe out the settings on entry to edit. That really makes no sense. Either disallow editing but show the actual definition settings, or allow editing and show the actual settings on edit. Accepting a definition as a text watermark but then showing it as an image watermark on re-entry is just wrong.

any idea when this will be corrected?

There's a number of things we're working on that I'm really excited to finish up that we're focusing on instead of the watermarking tool. We wanted to get something out there so customers could easily create a text based watermark ... and it is easy to create, or even re-create. For most, the preview image shown is sufficient and does a great job showing how the watermark will look so you can tweak the settings. Since there are only a few options, it's pretty quick to re-create the watermark settings, though I concur it's annoying to have to remember exactly what they were. For now you'll need to re-create the settings of the text based watermark
