Too small thumbnails on mobile

I like the thumbnail gallery style because both landscape and portrait pictures get an equal amount of attention. I also like to have some space between the thumbnails. But I don't think this looks good on my mobile phone, because the larger the space, the smaller the thumbnails get. And I have three columns of thumbnails on my Mac, but also three columns on my iPhone, with relatively large space between, which results in very tiny thumbnails, and often unreadable titles.

I think a smaller screen should show fewer columns of thumbnails to maintain a certain size. I thought this was one of the main points with responsive layout.
