There are two things that reduce the potentially horrendous smell. One is the temperature was in the 40s and the other is that the wind was blowing about 30 knots, which it does most of the time. Even then you could definitely smell them. One of the rules at the station is that you NEVER wear your shoes indoors because any where you walk you are walking on poop.
Here are a couple of more penguin shots. These are African penguins, a little easier to visit these, you can drive to see them from Cape Town South Africa

I know of islands in Alaska where you can smell the sea lions from miles away, even when the temps are below freezing.

These remind me of a recently watched 'Life on Earth 2' which featured a place with about 1.5m resident penguins - iirc.
Pic 4 - but with the green / bg cropped out is the strongest imo.
