Making a Card

So my daughter was making a card (complete with Limerick!--a clean one, BTW) for her mom.

I was sitting there with my new 50 1.4, and nothing to do, so I thought I'd play with the short depth of field. I definitely went too far, and the mixed light didn't help, either. But here they are, any come close to working?

I like the first one, the others as you said to shallow DOF. They also look a bit yellow to me but I don't have a calibrated monitor..

Well, with the mixed light if I made the paper neutral, she looked weird. I didn't want to get into a major color correction on these. Looking at the last one, her hand is cut off weird, too.

I like the first 2. I think the shallow DOF works on the 2nd. Maybe a BW conversion could help smooth out the odd light?

    The first one is excellent.

    The others are irritating. rolleyes1.gif

    Hi David,

I like them all except the third. I would like to see the last one converted to black and white. Maybe the first one too. ne_nau.gif

How do you like your lens so far?

So far, so good! I like it a lot, it's a huge step up from the 1.8. Well, I like to tell myself it is, anyway. These shots were me pushing it to one end--wide open. I need to learn the lens, and this was a good place to start!

    Nice. Great color.

It seems like your photo is lacking a black point...

    Kidding. :D

Here's two versions of the last shot. The first was converted following Andy's B/W Tute and the second was using Greg Gorman's method, which is linked in Andy's tute.

Not sure it's any better in b/w (actually, both are toned with a chocolate brown), what do you think?

Again, Andy's method first, Gorman's second:

I do like them better but, hmmm not sure about the brownish tint. I like that it gives off a warmer feeling than a stark b&w conversion.

Ok, Now that I went back and looked at them again I would have to say that Andy's method is the best. I do like the warmer tone.thumb.gif

I REALLY like the first one converted to b&w.

Glad you like the lens. I have the 1.8 and love it but, now I wonder if I would like the 1.4 better. :uhoh

The untoned version is nice to. I think the black and white helps to look at the picture instead of the color shift you were talking about.

Congrats David. I just got the 50mm f/1.4 just prior to the holidays and I love it. It's a very sharp lens but it does take some getting used to. I'm still learning the ropes for proper f/# and distance to subject for DOF.

I like the first one (and the B&W conversions). I don't mind a little out-of-focus blur around the main focus point so this one is OK. The others, as you said, were too over-the-top.

I definately like the conversions better. Andy's method looks blown out on my screen...But I haven't calibrated in ages so it might just be my screen. And I prefer the forst shot untoned. But I think the chocolate tone in the others looks nice.
