You can control the size of the photos in collage landscape style. I don't know what size you currently have selected; it may be that you will have the option to make the photos smaller.

Open a gallery.
Click Customize... Content and Design
Hover over the gallery and click the wrench on all galleries

Select COLLAGE LANDSCAPE
Change the photo size

I use that gallery style on my site, but didn't open up the gallery settings. Just tried to re-size via CSS. I feel stupid now...

Not stupid at all! You're used to needing to use CSS, and you also need to know that those settings are there.
