This is a bit interesting.
Looks like Heif will be the default for apple very soon. I wonder if others jump on the bandwagon or simply ignore it.

researching just a little, I really like the simple display javascript described here: https://github.com/nokiatech/heif
it seems like Smugmug would need to implement something like this, and allow us to save files of that format. So, how do we get on smugmug's radar?
