Somnathpura, Karnataka
Somnathpura is a small village in Karnataka, a southern state in India. Most people know of the golden triangle - Agra - Jaipur - Delhi. Some travel to Kerala. But every state in India has a history that amazes me. In Karnataka, Hoysala (a kingdom) architecture bloomed in the 12th and 13th century. Their lathe turned columns are half engineering marvel and half magic, while their bay ceilings are art and science competing for superiority. The sqaure (interior) and star-shaped (exterior) windows are ingenious and the sculptures are full of life and stories. The temple at Somanathapura was built 100 years after the temples at Belur and Halebidu (the first remaining examples of their architecture) and the development of their skill is clearly evident. If you ever get a chance, it is worth a visit.
