If I build a webpage on my desktop, can I upload it to my SM site using FTP? If so, what server address do I use?? Thanks.

I'm not sure what you are asking. Do you want to upload the CSS / HTML to your site? Photos to your site? We do not have any FTP support at all. If you want to upload HTML, can't you copy and paste it to your SmugMug site:?

    More details please :D

Yeah, I wanted to upload everything at once, photos, page layout/colors, HTML code, etc.

Guess I could export the page to my desktop, then go in & manually copy/paste the code to a SM html-only page. Then, upload all the gif/jpeg images & link to them in the code. Would that work? Do people do this allot or is it more trouble than what its worth??

The copying/pasting of html and CSS, yeah we do it all the time. Photos, you just use any of our available uploaders deal.gif I guess what we don't see much of is webpages built with 3rd party apps - but hey, you can always try, pushing the envelope is good -- sometimes!

    Cheers Kerry.

Kerry, you're gonna have to copy the html, css and javascript into your customization section manually, then upload the images, then go back into your code and update the image url's with the new smugmug url/image name.

even if smugmug had the capability for photo ftp upload, the html/css stuff still wouldnt work since SM doesnt allow uploading of anything other than images. They don't host your html files, they use what you put in the customization boxes to generate your pages on the fly.

Additionally, there would be no way for the ftp job to know where to put the contents of the html file you uploaded....header...footer...description of gallery_XXX...does that make sense?

Absolutely, makes total sense. Smugmug is not really a "hosting" site (like Geocities, etc). They do host, but its strictly a photo hosting service that allows you to input certain HTML & CSS but not radically change the pages to just anything you want. It still has to conform to certain standards. Is that right??

However, I do see many SM sites that are WAY different than the normal setup. They got flash all over the place, the galleries are setup very differently, etc. How did they do all that? Do most of them build the pages in a "website builder" like RapidWeaver? I cant imagine doing all that coding without the help of some app.

Read my FAQ in the customization forum, sticky. You can make an html only page with nearly ANYTHING you want on it, from your SmugMug site thumb.gif

    Not flash, though...

    Why not flash?
If you embed a flash object whose codebase/contents you've installed on another host, then it should be possible to show it on smugmug, shouldn't it?
I can't grasp the notion of time.

When I hear the earth will melt into the sun,
    in two billion years,
    all I can think is:
"Will that be on a Monday?"
