Basic CSS question

Hi All,
Trying to add some shadow effect to my homepage slide show images. First of all is that possible? I've never used CSS before and have tried to follow instructions on a couple of sites, as soon as I paste the CSS code into the advanced tab of my theme, the basic tab turns red with a caution triangle and I can't move forward. Is there a step by step tutorial on how to add CSS to your smugmug pages?
thank you,
Serv

Depending on what level you purchased, you may not have an option to edit HTML/CSS. Basic users can't edit HTML/CSS.

Here is a tutorial I wrote to add border, mat and shadow for a slideshow:

Customize > Content and Design
Entire Site > Theme > Active Theme (wrench)
Edit Theme > Advanced > CSS (edit)
