Dgrin Mini Challenge #264 - Panning
I love panning shots - I haven't perfected panning as yet, but I do enjoy seeing what others have done and am usually jealous of their talent. So for those of you that haven't tried it yet, here's the Wikipedia definition of panning: 'When photographing a moving subject, the panning technique is achieved by keeping the subject in the same position of the frame for the duration of the exposure.' Easier said than done! Anyway, let's see those panning shots - any subject in any setting.
This mini will run from today (April 5, 2018) to April 19, 2018 5pm PDT. Good luck everyone and have fun!
Here are a couple of examples:
OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and you post 1-3 images. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter.
The 1st place winner then chooses the next topic, judges the winner and then passes on the baton to the new champion.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
5. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.
Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (see here for help)
7. Don't be hesitant, share'em and enter!
Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round your first step is coming up with a new theme, and start a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging start a new thread (again use the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up, it is important to have runners up incase the winner does not show within the 72hr window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72hrs.
7. After the 72hrs and the winner does not show up, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the show.

I don't do a lot of panning, only found two instances where I tried it. Looking back at these I think I should try it more

I have only done one photo which would be a good one for this mini and it was a black and white film photo where I accidentally did some panning. I can't find the negative or the print.
Great challenge topic Jo. Usually, by the time I remember to move the camera, the subject is long gone, but I do I have three to share.

This was a well nigh impossible gig for me, since most of my shooting involves tracking moving subjects - and I've spent a fair bit of time and effort (but not ££ ) in making support kit that allows me to do it in the way I want to. Whilst I've got the odd one or two bif shots, I've decided to enter some fairly mundane pics of common subjects.
Great crested grebe
Tuftied duck (m)
Mallard
These aren't entries, but added to show certain things
mallard take off - two shots - I didn't track this shot - I just clicked as it happened too fast - but tracking to get another gave me the bg info to add to end up with this pic. Whenever possible I'll do this (track) as it gives various creative options later, imo.
This has been posted before - one reason I didn't use it here - whilst the subject was coming straight at me, rather than across the frame, I still had to track it to keep the Af (single) point where I wanted it.
Slowly moving swan, but still tracked (one of several frames taken) ... and AF point shifted (up) mid sequence as subject came closer to maintain comp.

Thought I might be able to get out and try some new panning shots, but thanks to a spring cold, no go. Here are a couple I have - the dancer was done on a merry go round, which I think some people don't consider actual panning, but I'll throw it in here anyway. Great theme, great entries so far, wish I had better ones to add.
