Apple ProRes RAW, announced at NAB 2018
Apple ProRes RAW is a new "recording" format, apparently designed by Apple and Atomos as a more compact video RAW codec than Cinema RAW used previously.
For now, only a few camcorder/cameras are projected to actually work with the Atomos Ninja V to record in the new codec, which is the only external video recorder capable of using that format codec. No digital-NLEs are currently able to read the format, but the Apple Final Cut X software is slated for an update to allow ingesting the files.
According to Phillip Bloom, the following cameras should be compatible with the Atomos Ninja V recorder:
- Canon C300 Mark II
- Canon C500
- Sony FS700
- Sony FS5/ FS5 II
- Sony FS7/FS7 II
- Panasonic Varicam LT
- Panasonic EVA1
... and the DJI Inspire 2 with Zenmuse X7 should be able to independently record to Apple ProRes RAW within a couple of months.
(Edit: Rereading Mr. Bloom's page it appears that the Atomos Shogun Inferno and Sumo recorders will have a free firmware upgrade to support the new RAW codec.)
