Gallery maximum size of 5000 photos

Is there a reason for the current limit of 5000 photos in a Gallery?

Only thing I could think of was with it being a single page app the browser resources might get excessive when you go to the end of a large gallery.

Performance issues, as you identified, was the main reason. With user testing we also found that most visitors found large galleries to be very cumbersome and didn't like having to paginate through tons and tons of pages to find the photos they were looking for. Generally we don't see too many galleries hit this limit, and most frequently it's customers who are uploading their entire Camera Roll.
