Currently only the owner can see the amount of views an image has. I'd like to see a view counter under each image one which the public can also view.

Not sure if it's possible to physically place a publicly viewable counter like your asking, but this might be a good place to start - https://statcounter.com/smugmug/
Why do you want a view count anyway?, seems like a very early 2000's web era thing to have on a site.

Danny, asked about this a long time ago. I liked it when pbase was my provider. Not only is it not provided they make it extra hard to see what numbers you might have by continually requiring you to sign in to see them. It's the one thing that might make me go elsewhere.
