    They are on new black ice on the lake.. I think ice uses small stuff that falls on the ice as a nucleus and crystallizes around it. They are quite small and this one is about 1/2". They are not attached to the ice.

    I wondered where the water would come from to make more ice but there's plenty of water vapor above the ice to make crystals .
