How to build back links for SEO Google searching?

Hello folks - I'm doing a complete overhaul of my website. I'm serious about search engine optimization for Google purposes. One thing that helps is to have back links. This means other sites link to your own site. No other sites link to my photo site at the moment. Wondering if you have any experience getting this implemented for you? If so, please let me know how you went about doing it.

You should NOT BUILD links. Period. Building links may have worked years ago, but nowadays, you can get yourself in hot water. Your content should be worth it that people will want to link to, naturally. You might want to read my SEO for the Photographer link in my signature.
