Pre-dawn pelican in fog
Hello,
Recently travelled from Minnesota to San Diego - lot more birds in San Diego this time of year!
As an aside I learned that the pink band that appears in the sky opposite the sun just before sunrise and after sunset is caused by the earth's shadow. Kind of a cool photo thing to know.:):
This is one of my favorites so far from the trip.
Info: 5D , 300/2.8 IS , handheld , 1/1000s at f/3.2 , Av , Servo , Eval metering with Ec +2/3 , no flash, converted with C1 and ETC Profile

also, another thing to look for at sunset ,if you are observing over ocean, is the green flash just as the sun sets-its the sun behind the horizon shining through the sea between it and you-saw it many times in the kimberley region of western australia

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
How did you manage a peli head above the fog layer or is it PP'd a little???

Thanks for all the comments.
Since two folks have asked what I did to this photo - post processing consisted of cloning out a little bit of bird on the right so I could fit this one cleanly into a 4x5 format, as well as cloning out some sensor dust. On the "levels" slider I moved the left hand (darks) slider up to about 10 to fit the exposure. I tried an S curve but canceled it as the shot didn't need it.
That's it.
The 16x20 print looks (as prints do) a world better than the web version. Funny thing is that my wife just doesn't like bird photos (she likes my landscapes) and so I can't hang it around the house. Oh well.

Steve,
Fantastic job! Your wife don't appreciate it you can send it to me, I've got much wall space! A 16x20 would be awesome!

After watching all the bird shots that everyone posts here, I'm thinking that birds are becoming a little more interesting to me.
