also cropped in gallery thumbnail view but ok when viewing individual images. sorry, i'm sure this has been posted before.

I think OP is referring to the images of folders and galleries on a folder page.
This has been a problem since "NewSmug". They use images now not thumbnails.
Before NewSmug you could crop the thumbs and select one of those for the feature photo.
