Hello, I am new to SmugMug as of today. Can I use the search function to find photos in a gallery based on metadata within the photo. For example I visited the US from Australia last year and took approx 1700 photos in Idaho. Most of these have location in their metadata which I can see in the photo info within a gallery. Can I search the photos for a specific location, eg Boise?

You can set the lightbox to show the keywords with the photo.
See help page at https://help.smugmug.com/customize-my-lightbox-BygUggPkVHz.
You can also access all keywords on your site at /keyword

You can map your locations as noted on this help page, https://help.smugmug.com/can-i-map-my-photo-locations--S1yULgBDf
I don't use the mapping features so I don't know if you can search by location. If no one pops up with an answer here I recommend you check with the help desk. Here's a link to the contact form, https://help.smugmug.com/contact

It seems however that one can't search on location data within the metadata, or, strangely, display keywords on the images in a gallery.
I have found a work around for the first issue which I'll look at implementing.
What gallery style are you using? I think if you are using SmugMug style or Journal style that the keywords should show in the gallery. For other gallery styles you should be able to see the keywords with the photo in lightbox.
Here's a journal style gallery where the keywords show:
