This is a disease of Stinging Nettles, Urtica dioica. It is something anyone can look for and find, mostly in the colder months but at any time.

It is caused by a tiny Ascomycete fungus, which forms black fruiting bodies on the stems. It is said that all populations of the nettle have it.

It is not to be confused with the mild human skin condition Urticaria, also known as hives, welts or nettle rash.

The aesthetic properties of this organism are limited. :)
