How do you add family/friend?

When trying to add family or friend, I get "Sorry, we could not find that user". I have tried both full name and email address.

Yes, indeed. It's my father. I have invited him to my SmugMug site, using his email address. But I can't add him as family using his full name or his email address - instead I have to use a nickname. So how do I figure out his nickname?

Ask him what his nickname is.

I believe the nickname is the first part of his SmugMug URL: https://myname.smugmug.com
