Mandatory spaces

For years now I've had problems with mandatory spaces, " " . Or any mandatory character.
Any of them I use in an html box like captions or gallery descriptions take but do not show going back in to edit. Then when saved they disappear all together and I have to re-enter them.
Seems like HTML widgets are okay. Just checked, still remain showing on edit and re-save.
