erroneous Smugmug keyword parsing - what's the answer?

I'm updating the keywording in a lot of photos. I first update the IPTC keywords in my JPGs, then delete the corresponding files on SM, then upload the new ones. If I then check the tags on SM, I see that sometimes it's parsed my IPTC keywords correctly, and sometimes it's combined them all into one tag.

I've looked into my files with several keywording tools and can find nothing wrong with the ones that SM doesn't parse right. I've uploaded the same files to another site and the keywords are read correctly. I've spent hours on this and I'm out of ideas.

I could just give up on the SM tags, but I think those are the ones Google sees.

Surely there's an answer to this?
