Why can't I get rid of square thumbnails?

I have several galleries that use the Smugmug style. Earlier this afternoon, I turned square thumbnails off for one of them. I like the look. When I went to change the others to square thumbnails, I couldn't. The thumbnails are all square, even though square thumbnails is turned off! And, the first gallery has square thumbnails now, too! What happened? Why can't I get rid of these square thumbnails?

Did you go into Settings > Appearance to toggle them off?

Multiple times. They kept on appearing square, even though the settings told them not to be square, until for some unknown reason they decided not to be square any more.
