Can I Add thumbnails to slideshow or carousel?

I would like to make it more obvious that the carousel (and/or slideshow) has more images and I don't think the tiny scroll bar underneath, or the barely visible nav arrows are doing the trick. Is it possible to add a tiny roll of thumnails below? If not, does anyone know how to customize the scroll bar (make it more visible) and/or do the same with the navigation arrows?
