Spoonbills at Merritt Island

Hi Y'all,

Recently I was scoping out the Merrit Island MWR for the upcoming Florida shoot. I was happy to see that the roseate spoonbills are still hanging out there.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

    Great shots! I live just north of Merritt Island up in Daytona Beach. ANy suggestions for good shooting places around here? WHere exactly on Merritt did you take thos if you don't mind my asking?

    Nice series Harry. Great lookin' bird. All nice but I like the third one best, seems the sharpest to me as well as a nice catch light.

    Well Well would ya look at those beaks, perfect for scooping up pineapple rolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gif :lol4

    Darn pretty colors too, pretty snappy looking images to show them off, almost like you new that X before she got there thumb.gif

    And would ya just look at that low ISO ne_nau.gif couldn't ya bump it up just a tad, say to 4800 rolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gif :lol4 blbl.gifrolleyes1.gif

    Thank you very much. I'm a realtive newcomer to Florida (July will make my 2nd anniversary down here) so I don't know much about the Daytona area.

    Merritt Island should be doable for you. Its right off of Exit 220 on I-95. These shots were taken on Blackpoint Drive in the Merritt Island NWR.

    Another great spot is the rookery in the St. Augustine Alligator Farm
    http://www.alligatorfarm.us/
    The rookery is best shot from March to May when the birds are mating, nesting and the young are hatching. Its fairly quiet the other 9 months of the year.

    vEEEEERY NICE.....however.....I read spoonbill and I thought fish....not bird....was waitng to see one of those monsters on a 4# test line and ultra lite rod/reel.......:D

    Thanks Ben. I can't wait to get that replacement D2X in my hands. I wanted to shoot at ISO 90,000 but that seemed to be a pretty silly thing to do in the sunlight. :D

    Not to worry Mike they should still be here when y'all get down here. The only flamingos are at the zoo or the ones on folks' lawns. :D

    Great pics as always.

    I like the pose and curves in #1. For some reason the bill just touching the water doesn't do it for me. Wish it was a little higher.

    Neat looking birds. You have a few more than Minnesota this time of year :D

    Thanks Steve. Its funny I liked the bill just touching the water. I will have to go over the RAWs and see if I can find one with the bill out of the water and see which one strikes me as being better. Thanks for the feedback.
