Make Homepage Photos Larger

I'm using the My Pixie template. I'm happy with it except I would like the homepage photos to fill the screen. Right now the length seems to be limited, and on a large monitor the photos look small with a lot of negative space around them. I tried adjusting the container but if I make it any larger than 960, it says it is an invalid number. How can I make these photos fill the screen?
