The description of the Smugmug Uploader (macOS) says

Any time you add or delete photos in that folder on your computer in the future, those changes will automatically be reflected on your SmugMug site as well.

What happens when a photo is updated? Will the updated version be uploaded and replace the previous version

    The MacOS does see if an image is removed or added, but it isn't sensitive enough to note when an image has been edited or updated. Only using the Lightroom plugin can that level of detail be noted and an image republished if it has been edited once the gallery is published.
