I don't remember why I went outside with my camera, but this guy swooped down and was kind enough to hang out for a few seconds... enjoy

Thanks Thusie, yeah, I was curious what he was doing, at first I thought he was eating a spider but I don't think they do that. I never actually seen one open it's mouth...

Thanks Steve, yeah, I got lucky, for some reason I had my 70-200 lens on the front of my camera, I only wish I had had my 2x tc, that way I would have had much more detailed full frame shots instead of 800 x 600 crops...

Tough light and a small, fast subject. I'd say you did a really good job, seeing as how you weren't really prepared for small game like these little guys thumb.gifthumb.gif

Yes, by all means go hummer hunting with your 70-200mm with a TC clap.gif You can fill more of the frame with them and get some awesome detail. The only problems are getting fast enough shutter speeds (to slow those wings down) and a really shallow DOF (like 2 inches) if they fill much of your VF.

I got one yesterday too, from real close with an 896mm FOV. I can't believe the detail :D

Thanks Steve, yeah, the more I think about it, since the 2x TC turns my 2.8 into a 4.0 it seems like full bright sun is the only time I really have a chance catching one of these guys. Also, the stupid ivy background kept robbing me of a decent focus lock!

(Amazing detail on the one you got at 896! I can't believe you got such a tight/nicely framed shot at that focal length!)

Even worse Lucky. Your 2X TC turns you F2.8 into an F5.6 :cry I agree that shooting hummers against a contrasty background is almost impossible. I have always wanted to catch one at a flower, but it is sooo tough to isolate them ne_nau.gif

Thanks for your comments on the 896mm hummer shots. I was more amazed that I was able to handhold at 1/200......lol But you are right, the detail amazed me too. You should see the original. Detail even in the smallest feathers iloveyou.gif
