Changing my Site

Hello All, well I've been with SM a long time now, actually I hadn't realized just how long until coming here. But I have a question, I've had my site now for a number of years and I'm wanting to change things up a bit but not wanting to publish it live until I'm completely done, so can I do this behind the scenes? It will take time to do so I don't want to disrupt things with my current site until I'm ready. So how do I accomplish this. I think it must be easy but need some direction.

I'm guessing you can do this by creating a new theme without applying it to your entire site until you are ready to unveil it.
