SSL when using a custom domain

Was this ever implemented? Do I need my domain provider's SSL service or is this handled on the smugmug.com side?

It was implemented.

Per the help page at https://www.smugmughelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/18212351739284-Use-a-custom-domain:

Note: We issue an SSL Certificate for your custom domain while it's pointed to your SmugMug site.
