It is time for SmugMug to help users make use of their IPTC and other metadata

Although I think postings in digital grin should be deleted after say 10 years, I noticed that people have been asking for better metadata support earlier than that! Why hasn't that been added?

Come on guys! IPTC is a standard, a bit mixed up but still a standard. We don't need it all, but if we can import title and caption then why not the location data as well. Adding that shouldn't be that hard!(?) You have GPS data coming in. If files on my home picture database program have carefully curated location data it should show up in my smugmug too. :-(

An even better option would be to allow customers decide which IPTC data to display, and where (e.g.on top of photo (as with the caption) or only on the side.
It could be set in the gallery and image settings. A check box for each IPTC field the user would like dispayed. (perhaps with an option to change the Namefield... e.g. 'description' rather than 'caption'.

It would be progress for a great site and you could catch up to the lowly and not as beautiful Flickr.

Agree. I've included IPTC location fields for years, yet I can't search on location. That's just stupid.

I don't understand. If your images include location metadata (including Country/State/City), you should be able to search for those. If you only have location coordinates, that may be more of a problem for searching, but if you do, you should be able to map the image locations (Info/Photo Info/Map).

But Smugmug could certainly provide better information about which metadata tags can be searched for.

I stand corrected...I can now search on the IPTC location field. I don't know when that became possible---I must have missed the memo, because I know it wasn't possible before. But better late than never.
