Mini Challenge #380: Winter Wonderland

I really struggled to find a topic for this mini, but I finally decided on Winter Wonderland.

This time of year (at least where I live in a fairly warm climate) tends to be rather drab, plain, and "boring". We rarely get snow here and there's really not a lot to see of much visual interest in the landscape. I thought it might be nice to see pictures of winter beauty wherever you find it. This can be a landscape, people having fun ice skating or throwing snowballs, or anything that shows a beautiful winter scene.

Now that I've chosen that theme, I will have to admit that I don't really have much to show for photos I've taken that highlight what I'm looking for. After all, I did admit that I don't live in one of those areas that usually has much to see in winter. However, I have some examples that aren't as stellar as I'd like to give you an idea.

Edited: Let's end this one on January 17, 2025 at 6:00 pm Central time. New end date due to closing the Dgrin forum

Snowball Incoming

Snow on the Bush

Snow Covered Tulip

Lake Yellowstone

Bear in the Snow

Grand Tetons behind a still-frozen Jackson Lake

Mount Edgecumbe from Sitka, AK February 2024

That one time we did get snow in Texas--Snowmageddon, February 2021

I think everyone knows the rules by now, but if not, they are pinned near the top of the Dgrin Challenges page. Check them out.

Let's see your beautiful winter scenes.

Hi Sherry, Although I have to ask you not to consider these for judging, I have to jump into this challenge because I have so many snow/winter shots.
For the past few months things have been busy for us as we have been house-hunting and are not moving in 2 weeks, (eeek!!!) so I've not been able to participate in DGRIN as much as I'd like.

    1) Hot air balloons over Hopfensee

    2) snow-laden tree

    3) My husband cross-country skiing while I am taking a walk

I have a lot of snow and winter photos, so I have chosen three that were taken in the pre-digital era

    1) Oberlin (Ohio) in1958

    2) 1964

    3) 1998- Cuckold Creek, Maryland

The first two are digitized Kodachrome slides which I took with my first SLR camera that I got for my 20th birthday. #3 was taken with a cheap point and shoot camera.

This is a really nice topic - and where I will enjoy seeing all the beautiful and fun winter scenes. However, after our winter of Feb. 2023, I still have a different and traumatic view of winter. We had a Snowmageddon event that year, so here is my take on Winter Wonderland

This is the backyard with another night of snow in the offing. The small prints at the bottom of the shot are my small dog trying to figure out how to potty in his yard without drowning in snow. (I did dig out a spot under a tree in the side yard for his temporary toilet.)

This is a month later and the Great White Buffalo hung on in the Weeping Cherry tree, (there are two weeping cherries and both had buffalo residue)

And this is in the Tahoe National Forest - a nice winter day-trip - not in a Snowmaggedon year

I am loving these entries so far! The "buffalo" in the tree is very interesting! I don't see anything like this where I live (usually). I think we're actually supposed to get an inch of snow later this week. That will close down everything around here for sure.

Keep these great pics coming! I love them.

Looks like a fun challenge! I am going to look through some recent photos taken in Switzerland but here is one taken in my hometown a few years ago.

    1) A Tree and Its Shadow

    2) Cairnwood Mansion after freezing rain coats the snow

All, I am changing the end date of this mini to tomorrow--Friday, January 17, 2025 and will post a winner on Saturday. This is due to Dgrin closing this forum.

So, last call for Winter Wonderland entries! It's not too late yet!

Last call for Winter Wonderland photos! Because of the pending end of Dgrin, I moved the end date to today (Friday, January 17, 2025). You have until 6:00 pm Central time.

    1) Big Thompson River, Estes Park, CO

    2) Crater Lake Pano at Discovery Point

    3) Sunset at Crater Lake

This was taken from the Watchman viewpoint. I had been taking pictures of the setting sun illuminating the rim peaks across the lake (to the east). I turned around and saw the actual sunset taking place to the west.

This mini is now closed. It makes me sad that this is the last mini on this Forum.

I already know I have a tough choice because there are at least 6 or 7 photos that I totally love so much. I will have results tomorrow.
