Ok, I poseted a picture of this bridge in the whipping post, and people gave me a few suggestions, so now I want to post before and afters of three shots and see what everyone thinks.
Great improvement, Rhuarc. I still wonder if there isn't more black to be had in the first shot. Super job on the second.
Ok, taking what you said I went back in and using the curves gave it defenite black and white points. Here are the results i got after that. Let me know what you think about this version! (This is a third version of the first shot)
I wasn't sure how I should do it for printing. I usually either print in 4x6 or 8x10. What I did was saved the edited version with the crop the way I wanted it, then when I wanted to print an 8x10 I just went in and recropped my edited version for how I wanted it. Or do most people not crop at all and leave that until they actually want to make a print, unless the picture is going to be used on the web or in an alternate sized frame/matte? Thanks!

I found this version much more pleasing. It added that punch the photo needs . Can you quickly explain how you chose the black and white points? did you use the CTL key and select a light and dark region in your photo? my PS knowledge is limited. thanks!!

My guess, and that's all it is, is that you crop now, and make a custom matte if the shot is a non-standard size.
