WOW!

Don't know if this has been shown before and if so I apologize but this is the coolest earth mapping I've seen.

The link below loads a section of Hollywood (Los Angeles) CA but you can seek out any place on earth. Enjoy.

I read somewhere that to get those rotatable angled photographs, they actually have planes flying a grid pattern at a constant height and with cameras pointed at the ground at a constant 30(?) degrees, until the entire area is covered. That was the Wow for me.

been googling the earth for a week now
I even found the swiss army knife I had lost in cub scouts with google earth last week by the side of a parking lot up in a Wisconsin campground. I drove up there Saturday to retrieve it, but it was gone. I thought "how strange - been there for 37 years and someone takes it in 24 hours?"

Then I learned that the pictures were taken 5 years ago. 11doh.gif

Yet, google earth is a very cool program. Highly recommended for free. It's a bit slow on dialup though. eek7.gif

A fun website to play with is http://www.googlesightseeing.com

Only the "pro" version... This one is free. There's also a $20 version with GPS support.

Virtual Earth seems to beat Google Maps, but Google Earth beats 'em all because of the way you can mark and save sets of places and the breathtaking fluidity of its dedicated interface, because it doesn't have to shoehorn the application through a browser window. An amazing deal for $0.

Its only weakness is that you can only see the top view of everything, but try turning on Terrain and tilting the view until you see the horizon, then fly around!

I do like their 'bird's view' better in terms of looking at specific houses than anything that google earth could possibly with their virtual terrain tilting, because it's the real deal - not some virtually 3d object with textures (from top only) squizzed on it.
Thanks for the link - I hadn't seen this one! thumb.gif

And google earth has some AMAZING resolution for civic (non-military) purposes for some locations.
Try to search for "Cambridge, MA". You can actually see that people put stuff on their car's dashboards! (you can not see what it is, but you can see that there is something there). Pot-holes in the roads are visible, etc... Very very cool.
I can't grasp the notion of time.

When I hear the earth will melt into the sun,
    in two billion years,
    all I can think is:
"Will that be on a Monday?"

I just did a little google earth search and put together a mosiac

    54754409-M.jpg

on the left we have a taxi in NYC, in the middle is a taxi in Cambridge MA, and on the right is a car (no taxis!) on the "Google Earth Campus" I think that is the highest res place on google earth.

All of these were screne shots zoomed in all the way

can anyone find anywhere that has higher res?

The obstacle course thingy and the tents on the google campus are indeed very hi res, but I think they just grabbed a camera and jumped into one of their own helicopters and flew around their campus to create an example of what can be done with the technology.
