Nice shots Gus. The lens looks a treat. Sorry to tell you but I catch a ferry to work each day . It may only last about 4 mins each way and I have to ride 36kms to get to and from it, but it's still a boat ride.:):
We do have a ferry! Used to be essential before ANY bridge was over the Cooper River here (you all have seen the bridges, old and new).
A couple of months ago, they put the ferry back, just to see, for commuters and for tourists from that large WW2 ship here to downtown Charleston.
I might do that! Good idea, Gus!
And I love the 400, too. Actually, it is the only lens I have right now, it is my birding lens, bought from John Mueller early summer last year.
But, I know I was more impressed by your 10-22 shots in general. I wonder if they could have worked at all on that ferry.
My "replacement" lenses are due for arrival today. They are the 16-35L f2.8, and the 70-200 f2.8..............then I am getting the 10-22 from Rutt.
If the weather got really good I could try our ferry. It might not be as colorful. And I have to check times.
(We also, on Sat only at this time of the year, have a ferry to an outlying barrier island. And back. We can stay and hike the day away. I don't think I could "hike any day" away. I am scared, but do plan to go this spring sometime. With Bill!)
Good shooting, love that lens, too. Thanks for the idea, Gus!
I love the second ferry picture, the driver makes me smile. We have a ferry here too, it's the only way to get across the Kentucky River for miles. I ride it to get to class when the weather is nice. Ours looks nothing like yours though...it's driven by an old man who wears a salior outfit and hat, and smokes a big fat cigar all day while he rides back and forth with his old dog. I wish I had a good picture of it...I only have this one:
Someone should make a "post pictures of your local ferry" thread.

Tks amy...that driver is '9 finger al' for obvious reasons. I have known him for about 12 years & he is a great bloke. He will always hold the boat for someone running late.
That man you describe sounds like an interesting photo. If people want feel free to post ferry shots in here or maybe start a 'show us...' thread.
Gus, The colors in both are really nice but I like the 2nd one better than the first. The first is a nice setting shot, but the ferry's so head-on that the movement's a little hard to see and so no one subject really catches my eye. In the second one the pilot's staring us down and the bone-in-the-teeth shows gives us the ferry's movement nicely.
btw, I've always loved your Ratty quote. Every time I see it it reminds me that I need to get up to the lake or out to the ocean.

Thanks steven...he looks like he is going to drive it up & rip the camera off me. Once he got to the shore he saw it was me & waved.

get 'im to look a little more friendly and perhaps you can sell a shot to these folks, their website's pretty stark and photo-free or here - everyone can use fresh images right? pictures as good as yours should be earning you some (more) spending money :
You would have liked the "Ferry" I was on a few weeks ago, SuperFerry 18, hit this link and look at the pics, it wasn't a bad place to call home for a 11 hour commute. FYI, 17 and 18 are basically twins.
I have narrowed my decision down to the Canon 400m zoom and this prime lens that you have.... do you or have you ever used a 1.4 teleconverter on this 400mm Prime lens and if so, what is your take on the pros/cons?

Tks anson.
Andy lent me a tamron 1.4 tc at yosemite & i dropped it on & the camera wouldnt auto focus so i took it off & gave it back...im too impatient for that type of shenanagans.
Its long enough really with the 20D's 1.6 sensor making it over 600mm for me & it then has that beautiful advantage of being lightning fast on the focus & sharp at f/5.6.
As to it against the zoom...well i dont pay money for 2nd place. Give me prime lenses any day. I would never ever sell this lens or want for the zoom.
Here is another sample from it.

I wasn't questioning where you have been, I am just saying that rural RP can be a REALLY good time.
Love your ferry pictures they just make one want to go take a ride. The 400 5.6 would love to have one.

Edit, sadly SuperFerry 14 went down and took 139 souls with her, but I can tell you that 18 was as clean and modern as you would ever ask for.
