We don't do flash, but I'm amazed at what can be done with SmugMug, some javascript, and some cool hacks.

Stay tuned, I'll be tweaking my site again and see what else we can do deal.gif

Short answers: no, no, no, can't, no. You're welcome.

Long answer, smugmug is a html, css, and javascript site tied together with php (correct me if I'm wrong). A flash site like that would require flash, whatever the flash scripting language is, and coldfusion to talk with the database. Furthermore, you'd have to have access to the server to store the flash objects (which you don't) and you'd have to create your own databases I think (which you can't).

A flash site is nice and fancy but a pain in the butt if you ask me. It's overrated and difficult to maintain and update. AJAX and semantic xhtml and CSS is the new hotness.

One thing to keep in mind: We are photographers, NOT web guys, we pros who use SmugMug. Sure, many have webxpertise, but building a site that is EASY to maintain and update is VERY high on the list.

The slideshow, for example, on my site homepage, can be updated or changed in like 10 seconds. Seriously. And it has lots of applicability in pro-usage.

How easy is it to add new images to that flash site?

It can be easy. Flash can interact with databases the same as php or the new AJAX hotness. But the real question is what does it take to build flash pages? It takes $1000 worth of software and a lot of know-how. With html and CSS you can update your page with nothing more than your free browser.

And remember flash is way overrated. For usability, accessibility, maintainability, portability, and sanity xhtml, CSS, and javascript are far better suited than flash ever was.

I was hoping that smugmug would be able to handle flash as well. I just found a new add-in for it that would be cool.

    http://www.flashloaded.com/flashcomponents/hotflashvideo/

I could see having objects moving through a video and when you click on them it would link to your smugmug gallery.

I knew we could load videos, but I have tried it yet. My focus as most others here is on the photography side.

You can always host you homepage somewhere else and use SM for the galleries. Mine is not good, but a good example. You can see in the URL bar what is hosted where.

    Andy,
Can you point me to a thread or info about how you have your start page cycle through images?

I've got comments from various people that my start page is too plain. I thinkg what you have done will be the ticket for me.

    Thanks,

    Thanks,

Stay tuned to BigWebDevBoboGuy this week in the Customization Forum They are writing up a how-to on making the slide show hack. The reason that I'm not telling you now, is, the code is being tweaked. And, it's ADVANCED customization so and the only support will be via the forums here, mostly by volunteers. It works a treat, but you have to have a good understanding of how stuff works in JS and HTML so that you don't b0rk your site.

    Standby.
