Ch. 57 -- Happiness

She's been homeless as long as she can remember. I just gave her $2 and that's enough to buy a meal at the church's soup kitchen. Or maybe a bottle of cheap wine.
If not now, when?

    Happiness? Playing Socrates again? Living in NY and seeing endless amounts of homeless people, you have captured that empty look they all seem to have very well.

    Yeah, as I wrote elsewhere, there's not much left here of the person she must once have been. She's tragic.

    But she was also very happy for that handout. I like to think that it means she'll get a much needed meal, although it might fill some other darker need.
    I know it's hard for us to look at her and understand how happy that could make her. No matter, it a big moment for her today and at least for now, she's happy.
    If not now, when?
