Found this place out in the Arthur Kill between Staten Island and Jersey- right around Rossville. Down the river a bit is a marine junkyard, but this seems to just be a place where old ships go to die. I don't have any idea about the age or provenance of the boats, but they run from tugs to wooden vessels to barges.
In addition to the ships in the water, a few seem to have been dragged or driven aground.
these look like lifeboats.
A lot of these old hulks have engines, gears, and various other bits still attached. It's a great place to do B&W or "low key" (is that the opposite of "high key" photography?).
Anyway, best to wear steel toed shoes. On my second trip out I stepped on an old railroad spike buried in the mud, and had to go to the Jersey City Medical Center. Lesson for life, I guess, only look for the shot after you look where you are putting your foot!

I definitely want to go back, this time with tougher boots. If anybody in the NYC/Jersey City area would like to go with me, let me know.
