Weird CD question

I thought I had lost an Ultra-II 2G card late last year (ouch!). Turns out it was in a zippered pocket of some shorts that have probably been washed twice since. The card was in its plastic case. The card physically looks fine, as if the case protected from nearly all the water. In the camera it appears to function as well, write quickly, retain data, etc. And I copied 1.4G of data to and from the card with no data corruption. Will be trying "long term" storage next.

Has anyone had a card survive the laundry? Should I risk it? Any utility on Mac OS-X to test the card?

EDIT: Something inside the card wiggles when I shake it. Bad sign?

The wiggle is a small guard that sits over the holes where the pins go in. 3 out of my 6 cards do this so far, and it's because I've dropped them.

Very interesting, thanks for that tidbit. I didn't know there was such a guard inside them.

So far so good. Seems to hold data for several hours. Interesting about what causes the wiggle sound. Thanks for input everyone.

I fell into a lake with my P&S and the CF card inside. I let both dry for a couple of days and both still work fine (a year later). I would say you are fine.

Wow I am always dunking my cell phone in water, sometimes they survive often they die. I did hear of a micro drive surviving a washing machine though, which I thought was much less stable than CF but I don't know.
