Which One?

I've read specs on the Canon 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 USM and the Canon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5. I know, these are low end; however, I am on that budget and just now getting into SLRs. I've seen samples for each lense. For those that have the 28-105, are you impressed with the quality. The price is about the same.

I think I have settled on the 50mm 1.8 because of the price. Would 28-105 compliment the 50mm?

Having owned the 55-200, I'd be willing to wager the 105's a better bet. I was wholly unimpressed by the quality of the lens, and found it painfully slow. If this + the nifty fifty are going to be your only lenses, I'd say go with the 24-105, definetely.

I'm not a Canon shooter but wonder how it compares to the Sigma 55-200 DC? The Sigma is certainly cheap enough and I've found it a stunning performer (even considering the price) on my D100's. If you're interested then here's a short review I wrote about my own copy...

Yes. I have read many reviews. However, they were mostly reviews on one lense or the other. Never really had a good comparison chart. I thought somebody here would have these two lenses in their bag and can give me the scoop on which one they like best.

Although I'm new to DGRIN, I'm not new to forums. I would like to think that there is a "One Stop Shop" for all your information needs. I'm just curious what other DGRINers think about these two lenses.

Andy has the 24-105.

There really isn't much of a comparison... 24-105 is a sort of 'one lense solution' whereas the 55-200 is meant to be used with the 18-55 kit. Thats why you don't see head-to-head reviews/comparisons.

I'd suggest the 24-105, based on what I've read. (I shoot Nikon)
