Hi,

Seem to be having a search problem. If you have a look at http://camlaird.smugmug.com/Celebrities and do a search for some of the people in those pics (well captioned) like Jordan, Peter Andre or John Lydon it is returning results but no thumbnails at all. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Just giving this a bump before emailing the helpdesk. Any thoughts? All 824 pics are well captioned and have keywords but searches for keyords or names in captions either fail to return a result or return results with no thumbnails. ne_nau.gif

    Thanks in advance!

Standby I'll look later. Search gets updated constantly by the way, when was this gallery created?

Keywords - How to Use Them?
Not to be a pest on this subject, but keywords don't work the way they did before the lastest upgrade. I am curious if a fix is on the way or if we just have to live with what has been changed? I am surprised there is little activity on this subject because the keywords are so convenient for allowing people you share photos with to easily search through 1,000's of photos to find what they want. I for one spent a lot of time adding keywords to 6,000+ photos. It was highlighted as a feature of SmugMug and I took advantage of it.

You can no longer search for any item with less than 4 letters. In the past it was less than 3 letters. Many words only contain 3 letters from common names (Joe, Pat, Jan, Jim, Mom, Dad) to common things (sun, ice, car). You cannot search for and get the keyword summary results we got in the past. Keywords containing more than 1 word also don't return any keyword summary results.

By keyword summary results I mean the keyword label entered in the search box with the number of photos containing that keyword in parenthesis to the right of the keyword label. Clicking on the number brings you to the keyword gallery where you can mix and match the keywords to bring back related thumbnail photos. Very useful tool.

I have brought this up in the customization forum about 10 days ago and I did send an email to the help desk. I realize a fix doesn't happen overnight, but I am curious about SmugMug's thoughts on fixing this at all. Should I scrap the notion of keywords as a way of labeling photos?

    Hi Bob,

Yep we no longer do 3 letter searches.

So, how about a navbar on your site, with a link in the navbar to this page:
    http://moonmullen.smugmug.com/keyword/ ??

I could do one up for you in like 5 or 10 minutes.

    Such as what's shown here:
    http://davidrosenthal.smugmug.com
    http://baldy.smugmug.com

Not ideal, but you can search for Brother Joe via a custom google link did you know that?

    take a look at http://zions.smugmug.com

PS: Say hi to Joe for me, willya wave.gif

How did you fix that Andy? Also, I have tried entering two word keywords like "rugby league" into the customize gallery keywords section but it doesn't seem to like the quote marks. Any idea?

    there's a small lag. That's all, I think.

Just noticed something interesting on the search results page - captions show up fully in a bubble on IE however reduced to a single compressed line in FF. (example http://camlaird.smugmug.com/search/index.mg?searchWords=jordan&searchType=UserImage&NickName=camlaird&x=0&y=0)

Hope this is useful info, I feel as though I am becoming a pest on here! :uhoh

I removed the search bar from my site and just put in a link (albeit not too fancy) down near the bottom of the site. Having a list of keywords is not as convenient as searching on the keywords, but if that's what we are left with than so be it. I like the navigation bars you referenced and I'll look at the code at some point to add one to my site.

The google search is cool for people who know how to navigate between websites but my mom would never figure out how to get back to www.moonmullen.smugmug.com. I appreciate your creative thinking.

I know how many keywords you've put up, and I wish I had a magic answer on the 3 letter names (and you know how much I love brother Joe!). I'll do the navbar for you if you want. Just say the word. I can start it, and you can finalize it easily if you want, colors, hover colors, etc. You saw the two examples I gave you. Holler at me and I will be your navbar-servant deal.gif

Andy, what is the reasoning behind this? It is a pain as I will have to change my search procedures if 3 letter names are to show (I don't really want to use keywords)

Also - when I search for a word on my site it now shows up everyone else's galleries too (but calls them my galleries) so there seems to be a problem. This is on my password protected website (boyle.smugmug) where I did a search for 'Dave' and it showed up pages & pages of everyone elses galleries, but called them mine.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    www.boyle.smugmug.com

There is a site level password so you will have to use your admin rights

If you just do a search for 'Dave' in the search box you will see what I mean. Is it a general issue or the way in which I have set up the search function?

That's a bug, too. We'll fix this one, also. :)

Note, however, that searching inside of site-wide passworded accounts WILL NOT work. That's the point of a password - it makes it so your stuff can't be found.

Private galleries, Passworded galleries, and Passworded Sites are not searchable.

Andy was a little incorrect about this. Let me explain:

    - We *never* have supported 3-letter words for search.

    - We do support 3-letter words for browsing keywords.

(I know those may sound similar or even the same, but they're not. Searching looks in Titles, Descriptions, Captions, and Keywords for a given word. Browsing only looks in Keywords)

The fact that you currently cannot "browse" 3-letter keywords using the "search" box is a bug. The fact that you currently cannot "full-text search" for 3-letter words is by design and has been that way since Day One at SmugMug.

    Clear as mud? :)

Thanks for the response Don. However I don't agree with your above comment though - I do want people who I have given the password to to be able to search within the site (there are no gallery level passwords). I asked about this previously by email on more than one occasion & never really got a satisfactory answer.

That said, it is academic to me now, as I have, reluctantly, moved to keywords rather than a search box.
