If you could buy any Nikon???
If you could buy any Nikon digital, which would it be? I currently have the D50, but I do see it's shortcomings.
I'm thinking I may upgrade soon, but want something good. I prefer Nikon because that's what I am use to and this way I can interchange lenses with the D50...
Thanks for your insight,
Mel

D200 but if you don't mind Megapixel-shortages and want some more speed talk to Dr.It about his D2h

We talking about a camera or a model?
I guess it is a camera model. .. . . .

Frankly anything on a dial other than P,S,A, and M gets on my nerves. Yeah, that's nitpicking but it's the way I feel. The D70 and D70s have never felt just right to me. I love my two D100's but don't need I-TTL and don't mind the slower speeds even shooting uncompressed NEF's. The D2H, D2X, ect., are beyond my tolerance for physical size. The D200 would be the perfect upgrade but I'd wait and see if the various complaints about banding are anything or the usual new camera hysteria. It's the reason I've been hoarding lenses lately vs. buying a new body. That and the fact that my D100's still do what I need. :
I'm biased (because I have one), but I'd go with a D200. Reasons are: Cost, amazing amount of control and features, size, quality.
There might be a tiny bit better image quality with some of the true pro level cameras Nikon offers, but if you follow the in-depth reviews and look at the photos to compare, there's really not a huge difference.
Personally, I wouldn't want a camera as big as a D2x or D2h because I think I would tend not to use it as much and it would just be more of a hassle when traveling. The D70 I used to have is about the size of the D200 I have now. I'd say the D200 is a slight bit larger...but not by much.
When you scroll through all the menus of the D200, it's practically an identical twin of the D2x. I've even seen an online guide to setting custom options on a D2x for focus modes and I was able to follow the instructions exactly to do the same thing in the D200....the menu options were the same. I'm sure not all the same options are there, but you get my point.
As far as speed goes, I'm not sure you can ask for or want more than the 5 frames per second the D200 offers. It's nice to have, but I doubt I'll use that function much myself.
Currently have a D50 and am looking at the D200. No one has stock though:cry
It's 150 thingys cooler than the D50

My local camera shop (Hudson Camera in Jersey City) has a shiny new d200 box right on the shelf behind the counter. I could send it to you, for a small finder's fee of course!:):
The problem with that plan is when I buy something I want it now now now.
The reason I hate, and seldom do, buy off the net. I would rather walk around for 3 weeks and find one. Weird...
And anyway, how I know you'll forward it on and not start posting in whipping post with "your new camera"

I'm on the phone with Hudson Cameras now. They do NOT have the body only D200 in stock. At first they said they did, and when I went to order it, she said "ok, you want the Canon..." and I quickly corrected her and said No...Nikon D200. She said Noooo..Canon. I asked if it was the 20D and she said yes. When she finally understood that I wanted the Nikon D200, she said they didn't have any in stock.
As far as the one behind the counter, it's probably like the local camera shop here and only for display purposes.
I would have to say, the fabled FM3D
(but that's only because I already have a D2h and a D70)

Oh and for anyone wondering...I had banding on my D200 and it's completely fixed. I couldn't be happier...if anyone wants my banding update on the D200 and Nikon service it's here...http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=17081235

BTW...check BestBuy & CircuitCity online with your local zip regularly. They seem to have good flow of body only stock. If you're really desperate you could get the kit and likely easily sell the lens on ebay. Also, if you check nikonians.com a few times/day someone will likely post when they find availability online. B&H just had about 200+ body only D200's the other day and they were gone in a flash. Couldn't have been more than an hour before out of stock.

...if I can find one. I heard about the B&H bodies but couldn't get there in time. Is every new camera this hot when it gets released????

The D70 was hot but Nikon had some good stock. They were SERIOUSLY underprepared for the D200 demand. I know people that have been waiting since it was announced in mid-November!!! The best thing you can do is to not pre-order one...you'll just be a number on a very long list. When you're ready to pull the trigger watch for the places like B&H that don't pre-order...that's how I got mine in mid-December.
