Ok Folks Im trying to find out what I will need for the shootout. Lens is up in the the air right now but what do you think about the following:
  1. Lens (70-200 or 17-40 4L or 10-22mm EF-S)
  2. Battery Grip
  3. Extra Battery
  4. 2gb Compactflash (i have a 1gb already)
  5. This monopod
  6. Neutral Density Filter (55mm and maybe 77mm depending on lens)
Anything else I could need ????

Thanks all.

go with the 10-22thumb.gif from what i see on your list youve got everything for standard shooting. besiddes, you can always re-sell after the trip and buy a 70-200 if you find it fits your current needs better.
Anything else I could need ????

nod.gif a good sturdy tripod and head. for me, i would lay off the monopod until after you get a good tripod.

i always find myself wishing i had a nice tripod to sturdy those elusive shots.

Your lenses, I really don't understand the logic of. What is it you really need? Each of the three are so different in focal length coverage I think you should really think more about what you are wanting to do vs. how your current gear limits you if any.

    • circular polarizing filter(s)
    • hiking tripod?
    • backup device (2GB won't be enough!)
    • long lens for those compressed scenic shots of the horizon
    • backpack
    • a way to carry water and munchies
    • a way to get dust off your glass and sensor
    • ziplock plastic bags to protect from water or blowing dust
    • a good hat that won't blow off in the wind
    • sunscreen and towelettes to wipe the sunscreen off your fingers so it won't eat away at the plastic and markings on your equipment
    • sensible hiking shoes
    • sunglasses
    • possibly a walkie talkie (there was some discussion alaong those lines)
    • pen & paper to document shots if needed
    • cash for all the good food Andy will be insisting we eat :D

I would skip the batt grip, and just bring the extra batts, aftermarket, IMO. I've had good luck with them, and at $12 a piece, you can't go wrong...

Oh, and a tripod before a monopod, IMO.

If it's a monopod you want, then don't bother with the legs. They won't
hold anything of any significant weight. Go with this one and you'll be
fine. If you really must have a head, this one's tilt/swivel should be all you
    need.

If you want something for landscapes, a tripod will be much better. If you
use the search feature, you'll find a variety of threads discussing tripods.

Your lens selection. Hmm. I would like to have something like the 70-200 or
maybe the 70-300 and then something wide. Some say the 24-70 is soft. I
happen to like it. The 10-22 would be a nice selection. Bottom line, is you
will probably want at least two.

As for filters, my suggestion on the ND's is to use a square filter that fits the
77mm lens (think Cokin "P") and then use a step-up ring to get you to 77mm
    from 55mm.

CW, I wouldnt worry about the lenses you have but rather the other things such as a good backpack, good tripod like a CF Gitzo, 4-6 batteries, 2-3 sets of batteries for your flash. Chargers for both with car plugs if you can get them. and possibly most important 6-10 gigs of CF cards and someplace to store the images too.

I am bringing at least 6 lenses to cover 20mm-400mm + TC's. I'm sure others are bringing many lenses so at worst case you can borrow glass but borrowing the basic kit is going to be impossible. I'm not sure how many are bringing 2 tripods for instance.

Thanks Bob and everyone for that matter. So Here is some more info.

I currently have a lowerpro computrekker backpack that has done me well on my recent trips to hawaii and other places. Im going to pick up some extra batteries but are generic really ok? Dont they lack protection circuits? I'll look into tripods here shortly but I may stick with the monopod that ian408 mentioned.

    Keep the suggestions coming. thumb.gif
