I've been waiting for better skies and finally got something better than gray to reshoot this tree. What do you think?

Interesting pattern of dark and light. Very high (too high?) contrast.

Tessa, what this camera can do that your 828 couldn't is shallow DOF. Try some portraits of people and open up the aperture all the way. Try to get focus on the eyes. Or don't use people, but highlight one element of a scene with shallow DOF. It's one of the most basic tools of photography and this camera can do it, but your older camera can't. Once you start to play with it, you'll never get tired of it.
