profile rant

"...won't you be my neighbor?..."

I've enjoyed this site immensely since joining and I have to admit I'm about as addicted to it as I've ever been to anything (except crack cocaine but I licked that bug)

I've enjoyed participating and I've enjoyed getting to know folk from around the world; as well as anyone can on a website. I've especially enjoyed meeting and shooting with my socal grinner buddies.

Now comes the rant:

I'm noticing a growing number of members with absolutely no information incorporated into their profiles. No name, no location, no age, no NOTHING.

I'm starting to feel like I'm interacting with a bunch of criminals on the lam, afraid of being "found out".

Please, if you're reading this check your avatar, check your profile. If they're blank, edit them. Make yourself real. Warm up to your dGrin neighbors.

good night and good luck

lova ya, mean it!

I think a lot of people are extra-careful nowadays with information they devulge. You really never know who is watching.:uhoh (nothin' to see here, Mr. President, sir!)

As someone who deals with information security on a daily basis, I can't really blame them... people talk when they want to talk. Most people will respond if they're asked, though.

Personally, I don't give out my smugmug address because it's mostly family related things... but any picture I post has it embedded in the HTML, so I consider it "public" knowledge.

    Just my PoV.

I can see that, Chris, but nobody is asking for your address and phone number. It is just very nice to be able to look right below someone's avatar and know if they are in Minnesota or Florida or Calgary or Taiwan or Russia... you get the point. It gives you some idea of where the person is coming from, figuratively and literally. IMO

I agree with you about your smugmug account. And on top of that, not everyone here has a smugmug account anyway. It's not a big deal to me, but general location of the poster is.

    Location, mostly.

And since this is a photography forum, knowing what kind of camera someone is using is often vital to answering a question they might have.

Now that I have my Catapult Latin Secret Decoder Ring. I don't know if I'll be able to translate any Latin without catapults, but for now that doesn't seem to be necessary.

    My alma matter's motto is:
    Non satis scire.

    The best ever translation:
    To know is not necessary.
    If not now, when?

I see where you are going at, and i actually agree with you to a certain point. It's always nice to get to know the people around you. Even when they are virtual, it's nice to get a friendly feel. However, the internet is THE place for people to not show it all and be sort of anonymous. Some people actually like that.

The other problem is that it is so easy to find out information about people, that you might not want disclosed. The basic email and address is the first thing people can find, but also other sites that you have posted/registered, comments you made on sites of (sport)clubs for instance, give you information about your interests, possibly friends, times that you are not at home etc. It sounds a little far-fetched, but all this can give someone alot of information about a person, and make him/her vulnerable for (identity-)theft, accescodes etc.

There is alot that can be done to limit that.
For example, i always publish / sign my posts with my first name. Never with my last name (actually there is one post on Dgrin where you can find it, and i actually thought about deleting it, hehehehe) Even on my smugmug, my last name is not there. Also, i don't post pictures of the house i am (currently) living in, the car i am currently driving, my birthdate etc.

It sounds far-fetched, but i know it's possible. I've done id-theft and information-theft before (legally), and it is scary how easy it was in some situations.

So, it's not always that people are a "bunch of criminals on the lam, afraid of being found out". Sometimes its a definite choice to be anonymous, and sometimes it can be because of the fear of information-theft. Allthough i do have most fields filled in, i can understand people not filling in fields. After all, it's nice being anonymous sometimes, isn't it? And i also don't think that one can obligate people to fill in some or all fields.
