rime ice on the mountain tops

Snow has been fairly scarce here in the southern Appalachians this winter, but I was fortunate enough to come across this beautiful scene last Sunday. I believe it's a combination of rime ice and light snow and the location is Max Patch Mountain in western NC near the Tenn border. Conditions were partly cloudy and windy. The low mid afternoon sun and fast moving clouds made for some interesting lighting. Thanks for looking - all comments are welcome!

Wow! I was born in Kingsport, TN in the 70-s, and I don't think I have ever seen that much snow around those parts in my life. Do you know if the Tri-Cities got snow like that as well?

I'm not sure with this last storm, I think the white stuff was limited to the higher elevations. This week end might be different, tho. There's a heavy snow warning in effect for this area tonight into Sat and Sun. I'm getting ready to pack my gear and head farther up into the mountains just in case! The 'experts' have been known to be wrong...

    Also - thanks, Sid!

Hope everyone has a great week end. I expect to see some snow pics from New England when I get back. Looks like you guys might get pounded.

It's nice to see a phenomenon I have never seen before. Thank's for the descriptive link. BTW - always enjoy your shots.
